Elections come with their own frenzy & tamasha, but are 1 of the biggest assets of our country. I have always believed that Indians are the best critics in the world and in an Olympics for critics all the 10 finalist would be us. We criticize everything under the sun, from the work culture in our office to the one in Government offices. But we just talk. Metaphorically we are the dogs who bark but don’t bite.
And that’s what Mumbaikars proved in these parliamentary elections. Even after an aggressive campaign by NGOs & Media a paltry 43% vote out. The 15 minutes of fame Mumbai got when lakhs came out & took to the streets in support of CHANGE in the winter after 26/11 was conveniently forgotten by the same people in the sweltering summer of May. Mumbaikars easily criticize the policies by Mahatma & Nehru but cannot sweat like them for the nation, forget the fact about giving blood or going to Jail! Whatever we do we need the spotlight on us & that’s all there is to it.
No media No fun.
Actually speaking it is the mistake of Election commision; they should have kept in mind the amount of youngsters voting in these elections and set up Virtual polls at Orkut & Facebook. Am sure this would have ensured 100% voting! Another mistake as pointed out by an imminent politician is we should have Elections in February; WHY??? On the contrary we should make sure that each & every election takes place on the hottest day of the year, this way we will have those who really care to come out & vote and the wannabes can have their share of fun in demonstrations & rallies in winters or their Orkut communities.
Mentioning this in my write up, I feel so clichéd but all Mumbaikars do is crib! Whether it is the water shortage or the pot holes, no one ever makes an effort to go up to the concerned authorities & launch a complaint or take it up in the right forum. Everyone complaints of the lack of security & the sense of insecurity but then how many from the Mumbai city join the armed forces or the IAS & look at it as a career option from the outset and not a spurt of consciousness in and around such incidence? Mumbai keeps crying for more monetary allocation in fiscal budgets to the city because it contributes 6% to the countries GDP, but why not discuss the amount of Black money & money laundering activities which the city gets into to evade taxes?
Today I don’t feel very proud to be associated with this City, which claims to fight back, on the contrary we are more of a city which finds convenience over patriotism & Democracy.

strongly written. Its a shame that Mumbai wants and does not want to give. Even Jharkhand recorded a higher voter turnout.
